Surf Travel Guide
The Essential Surf Travel Checklist
Preparing for surf travel requires looking beyond basic luggage. This guide details gear, safety prep, and spot worksheets for packing smart and paddling out safely.
Before You Book: Spot Research
A surf trip starts months before you pack your board. Understanding your destination helps determine your gear checklist and avoids surprises in the lineup. Take time to research the local climate, water temperature, break types, and common entry conditions.
Board & Hardware Prep
Ensure your hardware matches your destination. Airlines are notorious for rough handling, so invest in board protection first.
- Board Bag: Double-padded coffin bag with at least 10mm padding.
- Fins & Key: Pack spare fins and at least two fin keys. Store them in a separate pouch.
- Leashes: Bring two leashes—one matching your wave height and a slightly thicker backup leash.
- Surf Wax: Choose the correct temperature range for your destination (Tropical, Warm, Cool, or Cold). Scrap off old wax before packing to reduce weight and mess.
Safety & First-Aid Essentials
Many remote surf destinations are miles away from the nearest pharmacy or clinic. Always carry a dedicated surf medical kit.
- Ding Repair Kit: Solar-cure resin (UV-activated), sandpaper, and fiberglass patches.
- Reef Cuts & Scrapes: Antiseptic wipes, rubbing alcohol, waterproof band-aids, and medical tape.
- Protection: Reef-safe, water-resistant zinc oxide sunscreen (SPF 50+) and rash guards.
On-Site Worksheet: Arriving at the Break
When you arrive at a new break, fill out a quick mental check sheet before unpacking your gear:
- Where is the entry channel? Spot where the waves are not breaking.
- Where is the exit plan? Identify safe sandy zones or slipways in case of currents.
- What are the local hazards? Look for exposed rocks, shallow reef heads, or pier pylons.
- Who is in the water? Assess if there are families, surf schools, or highly competitive locals. Match your spot choice to the crowd dynamic.
